What is Restylane and how does it work?

In this blog post, we will try to explain what Restylane actually is and what it does to our skin.

There is no doubt that Restylane has become a very popular form of treatment for wrinkles in Norway in recent years. We have noticed that more people want to be treated with Restylane, and we receive daily questions about the product.

In this blog post, we will try to explain what Restylane actually is and what it does to our skin.

We are an authorized Restylane clinic. Find out more about Restylane treatment in Bergen here.

How Restylane works

In short, Restylane is a type of gel that is injected under the skin in areas where wrinkles, furrows, lines, and scars have appeared. The gel increases the volume of the subcutaneous tissue and fills in wrinkles, lines, and scars.

To truly understand what Restylane is and how it works, we must first understand how our skin is structured. Our skin is made up of three layers:

  • The subcutaneous tissue
  • The learning curve
  • The epidermis.

The wrinkles appear in the leather skin

The dermis is the layer of skin defined by the wrinkles that appear. The dermis consists of firm connective tissue containing collagen fibers and elastin fibers. Between these fibers are large molecules called hyaluronic acid. These molecules fill out the skin tissue by increasing in volume, making our skin smooth and wrinkle-free.

Collagen and its contents (hyaluronic acid), together with elastin and fluid content, are the substances that give our skin its fullness and elasticity.

As our skin ages and is exposed to external stresses, our natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases, which in turn means that the fibers (skin) lose volume, tension, and smoothness. This can be easily visualized by thinking of an inflated balloon that has been lying around for a while. As the air leaks out of the balloon, it will wrinkle and shrink. However, if you manage to blow new air into the balloon, it will increase in size and the wrinkles will smooth out again.

Restylane mimics the body's own hyaluronic acid molecules and helps the body to add volume to the fibers in the areas being treated. By adding volume to the skin in the relevant areas, wrinkles and lines are immediately smoothed out.

The Restylane treatment involves injecting a small, thin needle containing non-animal, laboratory-produced hyaluronic acid a few millimeters under the skin. This increases the dog's retention of the molecules that are so important for youthful, wrinkle-free skin.
The result after treatment is that areas where there were previously wrinkles, furrows, or scars are filled in from the inside out.

Since hyaluronic acid molecules found naturally in the body vary in size in different areas, Restylane has also developed products with different molecule sizes. Talk to your practitioner about which products are best for you.
