After significant weight loss, either through lifestyle changes or surgery, many people find that the skin on the inside of their thighs does not retract. Thigh lift after weight loss (post-bariatric thigh lift) is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and tightens the tissue to give a firmer and more harmonious contour to the thighs.
The procedure is performed by plastic surgeon Leana Rodríguez Standal, a specialist in plastic surgery with extensive experience in the treatment of lipedema, liposuction, breast surgery, and body surgery.
Who is this procedure suitable for?
This procedure is suitable for those who have undergone significant weight loss, often after obesity surgery, and are bothered by loose skin on the inner thighs. Typical problems include discomfort, repeated skin irritation, chafing, and problems with clothing and physical activity.
What is post-bariatric thigh lift surgery?
Thigh lift surgery involves the surgeon removing excess skin and any fatty tissue from the inner thighs. The aim is to achieve firmer skin, better proportions and increased physical comfort. The procedure usually results in a noticeable lift of the tissue, and scars are discreetly placed along the inner thighs.
The result is permanent, provided that your weight remains stable.
Who is thigh plastic surgery suitable for?
Good candidates for post-bariatric thigh lift surgery are people who:
- Has undergone significant weight loss (minimum 25% weight reduction)
- Has maintained a stable weight for at least 6 months
- Suffers from conditions such as eczema, chafing, skin infections, or functional impairment in daily life
- Has a BMI below 35 (assessed individually)
- Are non-smokers or smoke-free for at least 6 weeks before and after the procedure
Preparations before surgery
You must first attend a consultation with our plastic surgeon Dr. Ileana R. Standal. She will assess whether you are a suitable candidate, review your wishes, and explain the possibilities and limitations. Certain blood tests may be necessary to check your nutritional status and general health.
Before surgery, you must:
- Remain smoke-free for at least 6 weeks before and after the procedure.
- Avoid blood-thinning medication as agreed
- Maintain a stable weight and good nutritional level
- Maintain good hygiene in the area to be operated on
How is the operation performed?
The procedure is performed under anesthesia and usually takes 2–3 hours. The surgeon makes incisions on the inside of the thighs, where the skin and any fatty tissue are removed. The wound is closed with stitches, and drainage and compression garments are used afterwards to reduce swelling and bleeding.
The scars are placed as discreetly as possible and fade over time, but will be permanent.
After the operation (aftercare)
You can expect some pain, swelling, and bruising during the first few days. It is important to wear compression garments for at least 6 weeks to reduce swelling and support the healing process.
- You should take it easy for the first 1–2 weeks.
- Light activity can be resumed after approx. 2 weeks.
- Full work and exercise can usually be resumed after 4–6 weeks.
- We will monitor you closely with check-ups with the surgeon.
Risks and possible complications
As with all surgical procedures, there are certain risks involved. Common side effects include:
- Swelling, bruising, and temporary numbness
- Scarring (which may become visible in the event of complications)
- Infection or wound that takes longer to heal
- Fluid accumulation or asymmetry
Complications are rare when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon and you follow the advice carefully.
Expected result
Most people see a clear improvement in the shape and firmness of their thighs after the operation. The results are visible after a few weeks, but the final results are achieved after 3–6 months. The results are permanent if you maintain a stable weight.
