Scar revision is a plastic surgery procedure that aims to reduce the visibility of scars and improve the appearance and function of the skin. The treatment is well suited for people who have unsightly or functionally limiting scars after injuries, operations, or illness.

Typical requests from patients include reduction of scars that are unsightly, painful, or restrict freedom of movement.

What is scar revision?

Scar revision involves surgical treatment of scar tissue to improve its appearance or function. The technique may involve removing old scar tissue, adjusting scars with new surgical techniques, or transplanting healthy skin. The result is usually a significantly improved appearance and reduced physical discomfort.

Who is this procedure suitable for?

The procedure is suitable for people with:

  • Function-limiting scars that cause pain or discomfort.
  • Scars with indentations that cause discomfort such as sores or skin irritation.
  • Visible scars on the face or body that the patient finds unsightly.

Suitability is assessed based on factors such as general health, age of the scar (usually must be older than 2 years), and realistic expectations of the result.

Preparations before surgery

Before the procedure, you will have a consultation with our plastic surgeon Dr. Ileana Standa. The surgeon will assess the nature of the scar and discuss realistic goals with you. Any medical examinations will be reviewed.

You should refrain from smoking for at least six weeks before and after the operation to minimize complications. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, this should also be discussed with the surgeon.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, depending on the size and location of the scar. During the operation, the surgeon will remove or correct the scar tissue and, if necessary, move the surrounding skin for an optimal aesthetic result. The duration of the procedure varies depending on its complexity, but often takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

The incisions are carefully sutured to minimize new scarring.

After the operation (aftercare)

Most patients can go home shortly after the operation. You will receive detailed information about wound care and aftercare. The recovery period is usually short, but you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for approximately 2-4 weeks.

Proper wound care and the use of silicone products or bandages can contribute to optimal healing and the best possible result.

Risks and possible complications

Most patients experience only mild side effects such as swelling and slight pain after the operation. Serious complications are rare, but may include infections, poor wound healing, or hypertrophic scars (thick, red scars).

Expected result

The final result is usually visible after a few months when the scar has matured. The results are permanent, but it is important to have realistic expectations. Scars will never disappear completely, but they can be significantly reduced.
