Laser treatment is the most effective treatment available for nail fungus.
Laser - The super method that removes nail fungus
Have you tried countless treatments for nail fungus that don't work? Laser treatment of nail fungus is by far the most effective treatment available. After 4-6 treatments lasting just a few minutes, you will be rid of your nail fungus.
At TBL Medical in Bergen and Knarvik, you can undergo laser treatment for nail fungus. Thermal energy from the laser is absorbed into the fungal tissue, destroying the fungus without the use of antibiotics.
Approximately 6 treatments are required, with approximately 2 weeks between each treatment. Although the fungus dies quickly after treatment, it will take time for a healthy nail to grow out and look completely healthy.
For the big toe nail, this growth process will take approximately 12 months, and for the smallest nail approximately 6 months.
What is nail fungus?
Fungal infection under the nails (onychomycosis, tinea unguium) causes the nails to become yellowish, porous, thickened, and deformed. It is most common to get nail fungus on the toes, but in some cases, the fingernails can also be affected. Nail fungus itself is not serious, but over time, the infection can destroy the nails.
How does the treatment work?
Laser treatment of nail fungus is quick and easy. The treatment takes only a few minutes, has no side effects, and is relatively painless. Laser light is directed at the nail, passes through the nail, and destroys the fungus.
We use two different laser technologies with different wavelengths from Alma Lasers in the treatment. A Q-switched Nd:Yag with a wavelength of 1064 nm and Long Pulsed Nd: Yag with a wavelength of 1064 nm.
The laser beam passes through the nail down to the fungal tissue. The fungal tissue absorbs the energy from the laser and is destroyed.
What results can I expect?
After approximately 4-5 treatments, the nail fungus will be eliminated in most cases. The nail will remain damaged and discolored for a long time even after the fungus has been eliminated. The treatment can only kill the fungus and cannot repair the damage caused by the fungus. The nail must grow through a full "cycle" before it returns to "normal." This takes about 6-9 months for small nails and 10-12 months for larger nails such as the big toe. Many people think that the treatment has not worked because the nail still looks damaged after treatment, but this is not the case. The nail must grow out completely before it looks completely healthy.
How long does the treatment take?
The treatment itself takes only 10-20 minutes.
Is the treatment painful?
Some people may find the heat from the laser uncomfortable towards the end of the treatment, but this varies from person to person. To reduce discomfort, we cool the area while we treat it.
Are there any side effects after treatment?
The most common side effect is a feeling of heat and therefore discomfort in the treated area, but this is expected to subside once the treatment is over. Furthermore, redness may occur in the skin in the area we treat, but this is expected to subside within 24 hours. In the worst case, burns may occur, but this is very rare.
What can I do after treatment to prevent reinfection?
To prevent new fungal infections, it is recommended that you use antifungal agents (Loceryl medical nail polish, Scholl Professional, Nailner, Nalox, etc.) on the infected area twice daily during the treatment period and for three months after the last treatment. It may also be advisable to use antifungal powder in your shoes afterwards. Do not apply nail polish until 24 hours after treatment. NOTE: Remember to put on clean socks after treatment.
