Removal of "donkey ears" after surgery

After plastic surgery procedures such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift or arm lift, some patients may experience the formation of small skin folds or protruding skin flaps at the edge of the scar. These are often referred to as "donkey ears" and can be perceived as cosmetically unsightly or uncomfortable. Removal of donkey ears is a minor correction that provides a smoother and more harmonious result after previous surgery.

What is donkey ear removal?

This procedure involves the surgical removal or smoothing of small skin folds that have formed at the ends of scars following major plastic surgery. The result is a more attractive and even scar, which improves the overall aesthetic impression. The procedure is usually minor and can in many cases be performed under local anesthesia.

Who is this procedure suitable for?

This type of correction is suitable for patients who have previously undergone surgical procedures such as abdominoplasty, arm lift or other skin reduction, and who have small protruding skin folds (donkey ears) at the outer edges of the scar. Candidates should have a stable weight, good general health and realistic expectations of the result.

Preparations before surgery

Before the surgery, you must come in for a consultation with our plastic surgeon. The surgeon will assess whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure and inform you about the expected results and any risks. You should refrain from smoking for at least 6 weeks before and after the surgery. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, this must be discussed with your doctor.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the extent of the procedure. The surgeon removes excess skin and revises the scar so that the area has a smooth and natural finish. The stitches are usually self-dissolving or are removed after 7–14 days.

After the operation (aftercare)

You can usually go home the same day. Mild discomfort and swelling are normal for a few days after the procedure. You should avoid exercise and heavy lifting for one to two weeks. Good wound care and the use of tape or silicone patches on the scar are recommended for the best possible results.

Risks and possible complications

As with all surgical procedures, there is a small risk of infection, bleeding, or unwanted scarring. Most people who undergo ear correction experience few or no complications. Our surgeon will provide you with detailed information about risk factors and measures to minimize them.

Expected result

The results are usually visible as soon as the swelling has subsided, but the final scar quality can only be assessed after 6–12 months. Most people experience a significant aesthetic improvement, and many feel more comfortable in their clothes and in social settings.

Price and financing

The price for removing bat ears depends on the size of the area and whether it is combined with other surgery. The procedure is not usually covered by public health insurance, but in some cases, VAT exemption may apply if the procedure corrects problems following public plastic surgery and the patient meets the national guidelines2017-national-guidelines....
