How Laser Tattoo Removal Works
When a tattoo is applied, ink pigments are injected into the dermis layer of the skin. The pigment particles are too large for the body to remove on its own—which is why the tattoo remains.
Laser treatment solves the problem. We send extremely short pulses of light into the skin. The pulses break the pigment down into microscopic particles, which the body’s immune system clears away within 6–8 weeks
Picosecond laser — photomechanical, not thermal
The difference between modern picosecond lasers and older nanosecond technology lies in how quickly the energy is delivered.
Our PicoWay lasers emit pulses lasting 250 picoseconds —one trillionth of a second. That’s about 1,000 times faster than nanosecond lasers.
When the pulse is so short, the energy is not released as heat, but as a photomechanical shock wave that mechanically shatters the pigment into microscopic dust. Practical differences:
- Less heat in the skin — lower risk of scarring and hyperpigmentation
- Less pain — the pulse is so brief that the skin barely has time to react
- Smaller, finer pigment particles — the body eliminates them more quickly
- Fewer treatments for the same result
Which skin tones and skin types can be treated?
Picosecond lasers remove all ink colors—including green, blue, and light yellow, which are notoriously difficult to treat with older technology. We treat all skin types (Fitzpatrick I–VI), but the treatment strategy is tailored to each skin type to avoid pigmentation issues.
The type of laser we use depends on the color of the ink. We explain this in the next section.
Each color requires its own laser—that’s why we have five
Tattoo ink is not a single substance. It consists of pigments with widely varying shades—and each color absorbs light at its own wavelength. A laser designed to remove black ink may not affect green ink at all.
Think of it this way: each tattoo ink color is a lock. The laser is the key. The wrong wavelength has no effect—or worse, it generates heat without breaking down the pigment, which increases the risk of scarring.
That is why we have built up an arsenal of resources. At our clinic in Marken, we have:
| Laser | Wavelength | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| PicoPro | 1064 nm + 532 nm | Black, dark shades, red, and orange |
| PicoWay | 1064 nm + 532 nm + 730 nm | All ink colors — including blue and green |
| Fotona YellowLase | 585 nm | Light blue, sky blue, shades of red |
| Fotona RedLase | 650 nm | Green tattoos |
There are five lasers with six different wavelengths all under one roof. Few clinics in Norway offer such a wide range of tattoo removal options.
730 nm — the wavelength that changed what is possible
TBL Medical has recently invested in a PicoWay 730 nm laser from Candela—and it is already in daily use at the clinic. The 730 nm wavelength is FDA-approved for blue and green tattoos, and it solves a problem that has plagued the industry since lasers were first introduced: blue and green pigments are extremely difficult to remove with older technology.
The specifications that make the difference:
- 250-picosecond pulse duration — 66% shorter than 755-nm competitors
- 14% higher melanin absorption than at 755 nm — greater precision in targeting pigment
- Photomechanical shockwave rather than heat — minimal risk of skin damage
In practice: blue and green tattoos that previously showed little improvement after 8–10 treatments can now be removed more quickly and completely.

How to Choose the Right Laser Combination for Your Tattoo
During your free consultation, we’ll examine the tattoo under light from different angles to assess the ink composition. Based on this assessment, we’ll choose:
- Wavelength — which lasers match the colors in your tattoo
- Pulse energy — adjusted to the depth of the tattoo and skin type
- Treatment sequence — the order in which we use different lasers during the same treatment
It is the combination, the sequence, and the precision that make the difference.
Here's how the procedure works — from consultation to completion
Tattoo removal is a series of treatments, not a single visit. Here, we explain exactly what happens—from the moment you walk into Marken for the first time until the tattoo is gone.
Free consultation (10–20 minutes)
We’ll examine the tattoo under different lighting conditions, discuss your goals (full removal or preparation for a cover-up), and assess your skin type and any previous reactions. We’ll go over the consent form. You’ll receive:
- A realistic estimate of how many treatments you are likely to need
- Fixed price and maximum number of treatments on paper
- Treatment plan specifying which lasers/wavelengths we will use and in what order
- Answers to all your questions
After the consultation, you can take your time to think it over. We won’t contact you until you reach out to us.
The treatment itself (5–30 minutes)
The treatment time depends on the size of the tattoo—a small tattoo takes 5 minutes, while a large one on the back or thigh can take up to 30 minutes.
Here's how it works:
- The area is cleaned and photographed before and after
- Put on safety goggles—the laser is powerful enough to damage your eyes if exposed directly
- Cool air is blown onto the area during treatment — this helps alleviate much of the sensation of heat
- If necessary, we use a numbing cream, which is applied 30–45 minutes before the treatment
- The laser passes over the tattoo—it feels like short, warm “taps” or like a rubber band snapping against the skin
- We use the combination of lasers we agreed on during the consultation—typically 1–3 different wavelengths per treatment
Immediately after treatment
The area becomes swollen, red, and slightly warm—much like a mild sunburn. It goes away within 1–3 days.
You'll receive written instructions, but here's the short version:
- Do not pick at or scrub the area
- Do not swim in a pool or use a sauna for the first 24 hours (risk of infection)
- No direct sun exposure in the area — use SPF 50+ sunscreen throughout the treatment period
- Light physical activity on the same day is fine; strenuous exercise should be postponed for 24 hours
You can take a shower as usual the next day.
Between treatments (typically 6–8 weeks)
The body needs time to break down and eliminate the pigment particles. Treating the skin too frequently won’t speed up the process—it only increases the risk of unnecessary skin irritation.
You will notice gradual lightening between treatments. Many people see the most noticeable change after the 3rd or 4th treatment, once the pigment has been broken down several times.
When will you be done?
We conclude the course of treatment when:
- The tattoo is gone—or you're happy with the result
- The maximum price guarantee covers additional treatments if you need more than what we agreed upon during the consultation
During the final session, we will take new photos, and you will receive copies of the entire treatment process for your personal use.

A team of licensed healthcare professionals
At TBL Medical, you will be treated exclusively by government-certified healthcare professionals —licensed nurses, doctors, and plastic surgeons who specialize in aesthetic medicine and laser treatment.
Tattoo removal is performed by Rebecca Bergetun and our other licensed cosmetic nurses. A physician in charge of medical care is always available at the clinic—you will be treated within a fully staffed medical setting, not by a single practitioner using a single laser.
Continuous professional development
We regularly attend courses and conferences both domestically and internationally to stay up to date on the latest laser technology and evidence-based protocols. We adopt new technology only when we are convinced that it truly makes a difference— our investment in 730 nm technology in 2026 is a concrete example of this.

Please bring a valid student ID to your first appointment.
-
4. Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
Yes, but not nearly as painful as getting the tattoo. People usually describe it as “a rubber band snapping against the skin.”
With our picosecond lasers (PicoWay and StarWalker PICO Pro), pain is significantly reduced compared to older nanosecond technology. We also use:
- Cryo (cool air) during treatment
- Anesthetic cream as needed, applied 30–45 minutes beforehand
Most treatments take between 5 and 30 minutes, so any discomfort is brief.
-
5. How long do I have to wait between treatments?
Typically 6–8 weeks. The body needs time to remove the broken-down pigment particles from the skin.
Treating too frequently won't speed up the results—it only increases the risk of unnecessary skin irritation. You'll see gradual lightening in the period between treatments.
-
6. Can all tattoos be completely removed?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. With five different lasers and six wavelengths, we cover all ink colors—including blue, green, and light yellow, which are notoriously difficult to reproduce with older technology.
Some inks are, however, more stubborn than others—especially white pigment and certain shades of green in amateur tattoos. During your consultation, we’ll be honest about what’s realistic for your specific tattoo.
In our experience, if we can't remove your tattoo, it's unlikely that anyone else can either.
-
7. Will I get scars from laser treatment?
The risk of scarring from professionally performed laser tattoo removal is low, but not zero.
Factors that increase the risk:
- Sun exposure in the area before or after treatment
- Picking or scrubbing at vulnerable skin
- Infection (therefore, no sauna or swimming pool for the first 48–72 hours)
- Inexperienced practitioner or incorrect laser settings for the ink
During the consultation, we’ll review your skin’s condition and tailor the treatment intensity to your skin type.
-
8. Can I sunbathe before and after treatment?
Avoid direct sunlight on the treated area for 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after each treatment.
If you have to be in the sun, cover up and use sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher —even in the winter.
Sun exposure in this area significantly increases the risk of hyperpigmentation and scarring, and may require us to postpone treatment.
-
9. Where is the clinic, and how do I get there?
TBL Medical is located at Marken 32, 5017 Bergen—right in the heart of downtown Bergen, a five-minute walk from Torgallmenningen.
- Light Rail: Get off at Bergen City Center (Byparken) — 3-minute walk
- Bus: All routes that stop at Torget or Bryggen are within a 5-minute walk
- Parking: The Bygarasjen and Klostergarasjen parking garages are the closest (a 5–7 minute walk). On-street parking is available on Marken and the surrounding streets
-
10. Do you treat patients from outside Bergen?
Yes, we regularly treat patients from all over Western Norway—including Askøy, Os, Lindås, Voss, Stord, Sotra, Sogn og Fjordane, and Hardanger.
The procedure itself takes only 5–30 minutes, so most people go home the same day.
